Whitmer Gilchrist for Michigan

John,

June 2021 is the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City, and this event is recognized as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Movement championed by civil rights activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two trans women of color.

Michigan has been at the forefront of advancing civil rights for LGBTQ+ people beginning with the nation’s first non-discrimination ordinance passed in 1972 in East Lansing.

One of my first acts as Governor in 2019 was signing an executive directive to strengthen prohibitions against LGBTQ+ discrimination in state employment, contracting and provision of services. And In March, I joined lawmakers in Michigan calling on the Legislature to pass a bill expanding Michigan’s civil rights law to add sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

As a staunch ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I am proud to celebrate this Pride with you.
