While impeachment is grabbing the headlines, the Trump administration continues its abuses. Latest among many is a new proposal from the Food and Nutrition Service to cut SNAP (food stamps) - again.
The latest plan would cut benefits for 19 percent of households on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called food stamps, while increasing benefits for 16 percent, based on a change in the way heating costs are calculated. Almost 8,000 households would lose benefits entirely. This change undermines critical assistance for working families, particularly in cold northern states. You can view the full text of the proposal here.
We won’t let Trump and the Republicans sneak their agenda in under our noses while they think we are distracted. As Stacey Plaskett said at the Cohen hearing, we can walk and chew gum at the same time.
In that spirit, join us in submitting public comments to FNS opposing their SNAP cuts. Public comments are being collected until Dec 2nd. Please send your comments to the Food and Nutrition Service.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - unique, well-worded public comments work! For more information, check out our webpage here.
There’s also urgent work to be done on the home front.
Governor Newsom promised he would sign SB 24, which would make medication abortion available in student health centers at California’s public state colleges and universities. The bill has passed the legislature - but he hasn’t signed it yet.
Tell Gov. Newsom to keep his promise and sign SB 24! If the Governor doesn’t sign SB 24 by October 13th, it will be pocket-vetoed and won’t go into law. So this is urgent.
Call Gov. Newsom at 916-445-2841 and tell him:
I'm calling to urge Gov. Newsom to uphold his commitment to sign SB 24 into law. Call between 9am and 5pm on business days to reach a staffer.

Indivisible SF Spotlight
We wrote a lot of letters to voters at Pints & Postcards! Our fearless member leading this initiative had to run home to print more letters for everyone. Remember - to really make change, we need to win in 2019 AND in 2020. Sending a letter reminding voters to register and vote makes a big difference! Join us at our next Pints & Postcards at Standard Deviant to write letters to voters around the nation. Or, write letters from home using Vote Forward’s website.
We wrote a LOT of postcards!. Indivisible SF wrote another 50 postcards to voters for the Democratic slate in Mississippi, at the request of Indivisible Golden Triangle MS. We also wrote 50 postcards to Gov. Newsom, urging him to sign SB 24!
Good news for #DefundHate: RAICES tweeted that as of October 2nd, all major banks that supported the private prisons behind mass incarceration and immigrant detention have committed to stop funding private prison companies GEO Group and CoreCivic. This is a massive victory. Thank you to our friends at many Bay Area immigrants’ rights organizations, and to all who joined us when we rallied in front of banks like Wells Fargo and Chase the past few months.
Are you ready for 2019 City elections? Our November Voting Guide for 2019 is ready! ISF has made several ballot proposition endorsements - check them out here.
