Dear Friend,
As we celebrate the beginning of Pride Month today, we look back and remember the 1969 Stonewall Riots that were the boiling over of frustration and anger at discrimination, commemorate those lost to hate crimes and HIV/AIDS and reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with all LGBTQ+ Americans.
As we recognize the many contributions LGBTQ+ Americans have made to our country and the world, we also have to acknowledge barriers still exist to full equality and acceptance. Discrimination remains in many forms.
That's why I was proud to support the Equality Act earlier this year to ban discrimination against LGBTQ+ community members in housing, employment, government, education and wherever it remains legal today. No one should face discrimination based on who they are, who they love or how they identify.
We can achieve full equality as promised in our founding creed, but we have to keep working toward it and fighting injustice where we see it. Every person and family deserves equal dignity and equal access to opportunities under the law.
I hope you'll join me at Pride Month celebrations and events across my district in Southwest Connecticut and the rest of the state. Let's stand together in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community with Pride. 🏳️🌈
