Three years ago we all watched in horror as children were cruelly torn from their parents by the U.S. government. As someone who came to the United States as a child, I remember my heart sinking when I realized that it could have easily been me.
I saw myself in the eyes of those children being torn from their parents, in the ones who remain separated from their families.
The fact of the matter is that cruelty is at the core of our immigration system. Rather than leading with care, compassion, and dignity, we too often default to fear and punishment.
And for what?
Every day without a path to citizenship, millions of families fear being torn apart by deportation as they drive to work or drop their kids off at school.

I may not have to worry about my mother being ripped from me at the border, but I do live with the fear that my siblings will be deported and separated from their families. Families like mine shouldn’t have to live with constant fear and uncertainty. Neither should the farmworkers, essential workers, Dreamers, or Temporary Protective Status holders who are our neighbors, our friends, our teachers, our nurses, and the people who put food on our tables.
Families who have worked and lived side by side in our communities have spent *decades* with the constant fear of family separation in the back of their minds.
The Biden Harris administration has said they’re committed to building a pathway to citizenship, and there is momentum in Congress. But we’ve been here before and we know it will take all of us to build a just immigration system. [[link removed]]
Every political debate treats us as a problem to banish, rather than as people just like any other that should be treated with dignity and have the right to live without the fear of being torn from their loved ones.
We all need to dig deep and push as hard as possible to pass immigration reform this year.
