Dear friend,

At the start of Pride Month, I have been reflecting on the overlap between the fight for reproductive freedom and for LGBTQ+ rights — both are fundamentally about the ability to control our bodies, lives, and futures. And in 2021, our bodily autonomy has been under attack through laws that restrict abortion access and laws that outlaw gender-affirming care for trans youth.

We know that people of all genders and sexualities need access to reproductive health care — and LGBTQ+ communities face unique barriers in the form of inadequate insurance coverage, discriminatory restrictions, and stigma. We’re proud to partner with organizations to develop innovative solutions to the challenges LGBTQ+ communities face when it comes to accessing care.

Our recent success in Kalamazoo, Michigan underscores this commitment. We worked with All* Above All and the YWCA of Kalamazoo to make Kalamazoo the first city with a Reproductive Health Fund that supports a broad range of reproductive and sexual health care options. Through a shared vision and strategy, we secured county funding for the Reproductive Health Fund, covering gender-affirming care — a critical lifeline for the trans community.

As NIRH partners with organizations across the country to push forward proactive policies at the state and local levels, we will continue to center the needs of LGBTQ+ communities in our fight for reproductive freedom.

Happy Pride,
