Dear Friend,

On Sunday night, Texas Democrats walked out of their Capitol in Austin to prevent Republicans from passing a bill that would take significant steps to curtail voting. It is a solemn reminder of how fragile our democracy is and the importance of winning elections to help save it.

Here in Virginia, we have a critical election over the next 7 days as we decide who will give us the best chance to win in November and, among other critical issues, protect the expansions in the right to vote that we passed over the past two years. You can vote early today at the Courthouse and other locations without a reason due to law passed last year by Virginia Democrats.

Over the next few days, I will share with you who I am supporting and why. I'll have two criteria, who is best on the issues/for the ideals we share and who gives Democrats the best chance of winning their individual election, and helping all Democrats win up and down the ticket in November. If you want to know immediately each of my choices because you are about to vote or heading to the polls, email me at [email protected]. If you choose other candidates, I respect your choice and look forward to working with you after June 8th to elect Democrats up and down our ticket.

In the race for Governor, I’m supporting Terry McAuliffe because he has laid out clear plans to move Virginia forward and rebuild from this pandemic, AND he’s got what it takes to beat Glenn Youngkin, Donald Trump, and the $100 million in attack ads that I believe is coming from Republicans. I also believe strongly that Terry is the candidate that can help keep our Democratic majority in the House of Delegates and has the best, detailed policy positions laid out on his website and via his speeches and his campaign's focus.

There’s so much at stake in this election and we’ve come too far and have made too much progress to let extreme Republicans win this election and take us back. Glenn Youngkin, the GOP nominee, is Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidate and received the former President’s endorsement on day one of the general election. He also was smart enough to acknowledge President Biden's win shortly after winning the Republican caucus and put millions of his fortune into winning the Republican Nomination. Glenn Youngkin has more than $50 million and he will spend his own money again: Youngkin will be difficult to beat with Trump no longer motivating voters due to his immorality as President.

Terry McAuliffe has done it before, when he took on extreme Republicans, won a tough election as Obamacare was suffering from the controversies associated with its difficult rollout, and restored the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of Virginians. Terry stood strong for the ideals we share, vetoing every single anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ+ bill Republicans brought to the floor. I know he can take on Glenn Youngkin and win.
Terry McAuliffe was key to winning in 2019, doing more than 100 events, including an event for me when it was not clear I would win, an early event in our Commonwealth Attorney's race, and helping our House of Delegate win races to take the majority.

I know Terry can and will build on the progress we’ve made. I respectfully ask you to join me in supporting him. There’s still time to vote early this week ([link removed]) and election day is next Tuesday, June 8th.
Sincerely,

Matt
