John,
Memorial Day is an important time to reflect on the countless sacrifices made by service members and their families in the name of this nation. The security, success and freedom that we enjoy as Americans only exists because of these heroes. It is because of the profound sacrifices of our servicemen and women, across generations, who have laid down their lives to protect and defend our way of life.
The significance of this day cannot be overstated. Today, there are over 19 million Veterans in the US and over 1.4 million active service members. On this Memorial Day, we honor all they have done to protect our country.
However, I can’t help but be reminded of the nearly 700,000 residents of Washington, D.C. who pay taxes and yet still don’t have representation in Congress. To date, there have been over 5,000 service members who sacrificed their lives for our country who were residents of Washington, D.C. Today, there are roughly 15,000 active duty or reserve service members living in Washington, D.C.
They deserve to have a say in our democracy.
My bill, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, would make Washington, D.C. our 51st state and give these Americans the rights they have been denied for long. This bill has record support in the Senate, and I need your help to get it over the finish line.
Today, I urge you to acknowledge the service members in your lives and emulate their bravery, patriotism and selflessness. And to all the service members, I cannot thank you enough for everything that you have done and continue to do for our nation. This day is for you.
Best,
TC
