Friend,
It's Memorial Day, and every year, I remind my daughters of the meaning behind this day. This is not a day off from school. It’s not just a day off from work. It’s meant to be a day of remembrance.
Today our nation takes a moment to pay tribute to those patriotic Americans who lost their lives in service to our nation. Because of that sacrifice and commitment, my grandma was able to survive World War II, emigrate to the US, and become the proudest American citizen you could’ve ever met. Because of that sacrifice and commitment, my daughters, Sophie and Tess, are growing up in a better world. Because of that sacrifice and commitment, you and I are able to enjoy the freedoms we share as Americans.
Showing gratitude for those who are no longer with us is important. But I think more is expected of us.
In addition to honoring their sacrifices, we also need to show an appreciation for the freedoms they died for. America is the greatest country on the planet, and that's largely thanks to the men and women who fought for it.
We must also do better for every single person who currently serves. This Memorial Day, we should all be conscious of the fact that military action often comes at a significant price. That means America needs a smart, more strategic approach to foreign policy. It means that, when military action occurs, our nation needs to provide the training and equipment our servicemembers need. It means we must do everything we can to bring each service member home safely.
This Memorial Day, I hope you’ll join me in commemorating the brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice.
It's an honor to represent you,
Derek Kilmer
