John,
A year ago, on Memorial Day 2020, we were in the deadliest days of the worst pandemic in a century -- and we couldn’t begin to imagine how hard the year ahead would be.
But now, thanks to the efforts of researchers and health care workers, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. More and more of us are fully vaccinated and able to resume a “normal” life. Despite the hardship we’ve faced, I don’t think there’s ever been a more important time to be grateful.
For the doctors and nurses who risked their lives to save others. For the essential workers who kept the mail coming and the grocery store shelves stocked. For teachers who went above and beyond to make sure our kids could continue learning in the toughest of circumstances.
And today, on another Memorial Day, we particularly remember those servicemembers who answered the call to serve and paid the ultimate price.
When times are hardest, we see the very best of what it means to be an American. We see endurance and generosity and bravery -- we see people come together to lift one another up.
We’ve seen that this year in so many of our fellow Americans.
But those American values are never more evident than in the servicemembers who gave their all.
We remain a grateful nation, made stronger by their service and the memories we share today.
I wish you a peaceful Memorial Day weekend, John.
Yours,
Suzan
