We've written to you about Texas Gov. Greg Abbott a lot recently. He seems intent on finding every way he can to put his radical right-wing agenda into practice at a rapid speed this year.
On top of a new voter suppression law, an extreme abortion ban, and his deadly mismangement of COVID regulations, Gov. Abbott made the time this week to sign a new law loosening gun regulations in his state. With this new law, anyone can possess a handgun in Texas without a permit or any kind of required training.
It's unconscionable that any political leader would allow such unfettered access to guns with the epidemic of gun violence that our country has been suffering through.
This year alone, there have been at least 229 mass shootings in America. Yet in Texas, there are now essentially no barriers to anyone, regardless of background, purchasing a gun and carrying it with them anywhere they go in the state.
Even Texas law enforcement opposed this bill, saying that this will create more dangerous situations for officers as they face more encounters with civilians who are in possession of guns.
Gov. Abbott doesn't know how to lead -- he simply throws red meat to the most far-right elements of the Republican base in an effort to get re-elected. Texans deserve better than that.
