John,

Above the World War I Memorial in my college church is an inscription that I think about today and every Memorial Day:

“While a bright future beckoned, they freely gave their lives and fondest hopes for us and our allies that we might learn from them courage in peace to spend our lives making a better world for others.”

I love this quote because it serves as both a memorial and a call to action. These words inspire me to do more for others.

However you choose to spend your Memorial Day—whether or not you have the good fortune to gather with family and friends for the first time in a long time—please join me in reflecting on how each of us can find the courage to serve. To serve our friends, our families, our communities, and our country is perhaps the greatest respect we can pay to the men and women who have given their lives for all of us.

May we all have the courage to serve.

-Seth
