It’s been a big month. The Supreme Court announced it’ll hear a case (Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization) that could gut Roe v. Wade, the Biden-Harris administration released a presidential budget free of the Hyde Amendment's ban on Medicaid coverage of abortion care for the first time in decades, and Ilyse Hogue has stepped down as NARAL’s president.

Next month, I’ll officially begin my role as acting president of NARAL — and it couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. I’ll be blunt: The legal right to abortion is in real jeopardy like never before, and reproductive freedom is under unprecedented attack by state lawmakers. We'll keep fighting, and I know NARAL members will be right by our side to ensure we have a future where reproductive freedom truly is for every body.

Protect Roe

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case directly challenging Roe v. Wade, putting our constitutional right to abortion in danger. If Roe fell tomorrow, eleven states already have “trigger bans” in place which would ban abortion instantly. Another 24 states states would likely take immediate action to ban abortion outright. The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) is a crucial bill that would protect the right to abortion for everyone, no matter where they live.

Combating Disinformation

Amidst a surge of hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders — fueled by racist right-wing lies and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 — malicious actors are weaponizing social and traditional media to flood the AAPI community with disinformation. Ineffective multilingual content moderation by platforms like Facebook and the rise of anti-choice, fake news sites like The Epoch Times have led to a growing crisis of disinformation targeting AAPI communities.
