This Month
While the hearts and minds of an entire nation were opened by George Floyd’s death and the evidence of brutal killings of Black Americans, there is still so much work to do. Congress needs to pass a robust justice in policing act to honor George Floyd. His memory should strengthen our resolve each and every day. Please watch the video message from People For President Ben Jealous on why we must recommit to the goals we set for ourselves: to reimagine public safety in this country so no more families have to suffer the pain that the Floyd family is suffering. This week, we were deeply gratified to see Kristen Clarke’s bipartisan confirmation as the first woman to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. We’re proud that People For’s leadership networks and members made her fight our fight. But the fight is far from over: the Far Right’s attacks on Clarke and other women of color nominated - and now confirmed - to leadership positions are only going to continue and worsen as time goes on. Watch Adele Stan, director of our Right Wing Watch, analyze Sen. Ted Cruz’s most recent attacks and what it means for the future. On May 8, more than ten thousand activists in more than 150 cities took to the streets for a nationwide day of action honoring the late John Lewis and his lifelong fight to defend voting rights. People For members, coalition partners, and progressive activists met up for rallies and motorcades to raise awareness about the four concrete things we need to combat the current scourge of voter suppression bills being passed through state legislatures: passage of both the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act. To celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we asked some of our Young Elected Officials network members to reflect on how their backgrounds have influenced and improved their leadership. This month, we spoke with GA Rep. Sam Park and MI State Senator Stephanie Chang about their experiences leading as Asian American elected officials and why greater representation from their communities is so important for our future. The Young Elected Officials Network is a nonpartisan program of our affiliate People For the American Way Foundation. Please click on each headline to read the full article...
