Mental Health Empowerment Hour - Transform Bad Stress To Good Stress, Wednesday 2nd June, 3.00 - 4.00pm

What a catch 22.....We have all been told that stress is bad for us. Yet stress is a part of life.

This past year, with Covid, stress, depression and anxiety have skyrocketed for everyone. Who was prepared for this? When will it end? These are tough realities we are facing today.

More often than not, we address today's stress with old patterns of learned coping skills.

The definition of insanity is addressing a challenge in the same way expecting a different result.

Stop knocking your head against the wall and discover new approaches that will allow you to move from Reaction into Response that allow for Resolve and the Results you want in your life.

Music as therapy

There are a wide range of talking therapies that might be utilised to help with many mental health issues, but less commonly used are therapies that use other forms of expression and communication to help people feel better.

I thought I would therefore take a look at the therapeutic benefits of music to consider its potential role in mental health. Music is an important, positive aspect of many of our lives, and I thought there might be some basis for using it to help with issues such as low mood, isolation, stress and anxiety.

Alfredo Zotti is someone with bipolar disorder who has helped a wide range of people with mental health issues using music. He is not formally trained as a music therapist, but he has written a book on this subject ([link removed]).

The following are some of his ideas that I thought might be of interest in this area.

"Music reduces anxiety, promotes wellbeing, becomes a coping tool and give sufferers an identity and a purpose to their lives"

Whereas one can't always be sure in advance whether someone will take to a particular talking treatment, there is a relatively straightforward starting point to using music in this way, as most people have a particular type of music that they like.

Whereas talking treatments tend to focus on the self, music shifts the focus to something external to the individual. There can also be social aspects to music which can reduce isolation, in terms of sharing our favourite music with others, or collaborative singing or music making.

Zotti explains how there are two fundamental kinds of approaches in music therapy, namely the receptive method (based on listening to music) and the active method (based on playing an instrument).

"Being part of the music world in any way - be it playing an instrument, simply listening or singing along - can help us to move the focus away from illness and toward imagination and creativity. This can help us gain a new, happier identity."

Actively focussing on something external or doing something creative can be good at relieving symptoms. It can be an alternative to talking about negative issues, where it can sometimes feel like one has a bottomless pit of difficulties.

Music can be very good at improving our mood and relieving anxiety, and it can do so in a non-invasive way. Once one has established some music that has this effect, it can be used over and over again in the form of a playlist one can return to.

Some people may benefit from songs with uplifting words, whilst others may perhaps feel better when they hear songs describing similar difficulties to ones they have faced. This in itself can sometimes help people to feel less alone..

Music can also be sucessfully used in combination with relaxation exercises such as slow breathing.

I often find that in the lead up to an anxiety provoking event, it can help to listen to music to induce a feeling of calmness and help me to feel more positive. It can transport me to happier times as well.

It can also be inspiring to learn about successfull musicians who have suffered from mental ill health, such as Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

You can find more information about Alfredo Zotti here:-
