Whether you’re spending the long weekend with friends and family or working, we know that your time is valuable. So to cut to the chase: Yes, this email is going to ask you to make a donation to Senator Maggie Hassan’s reelection campaign.

If you’re ready to donate now, by all means please do! But we also wanted to give you an explanation as to why it’s so important:

When Democrats won both Georgia runoffs in January, it created a 50/50 Senate. When there is a tie, Vice President Kamala Harris casts the deciding vote, giving Democrats a very narrow majority.

Now, Maggie is up for reelection. She won her last race by a fraction of a percent, unseating a Republican. But that same election cycle, a Republican replaced Maggie (a Democrat) as Governor. So as you can see, New Hampshire is a VERY purple state, and everyone from Mitch McConnell to far-right outside groups see Maggie’s Senate seat as a top opportunity for Republicans to flip a seat and take back the Senate majority. Bad news, right?

Usually, campaigns see the bulk of their fundraising in the days and weeks before the election, but that money isn’t as helpful as what is raised early. That’s because early fundraising lets campaigns like ours make plans for hiring staff, talking to voters, and creating and deploying ads. But that’s a LOT harder to do without money in the bank.

We set fundraising goals each month to help us plan out our campaign strategy. Truthfully, this race is picking up steam faster than we anticipated and now we’re in a place where we need to fill a gap this month. It’s not dire but as we said, early fundraising is more valuable than late fundraising. That’s why your donation today is so important.
