In an overture to Senate Republicans, President Biden recently agreed to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from his infrastructure plan. On the chopping block, according to NPR, were expanding broadband access, repairing roads and bridges, strengthening supply chains, and billions of dollars for energy infrastructure and manufacturing.
After this huge concession, Senate Republicans said "we are farther away" than before! They continue to signal their opposition to the investments our nation needs -- and that Republican voters themselves support.
Clearly, Senate Republicans aren't negotiating in good faith. Democrats can pass this bill alone.
Passing compromise bills after Republicans walk away while maintaining the concessions is a trap Democrats have fallen into in the past -- most notably with the Affordable Care Act.
It's bad enough that when Democrats make concessions to Republicans, they hurt workers and families they could have helped. Keeping those compromises after Republicans walk away is unconscionable.
It's also lousy negotiating. Allowing Republicans to keep their negotiating wins even if they vote NO removes any incentive for them to ever vote YES.
