Let me be frank, John: What we've been seeing from Republicans lately has been extremely troubling.
Twelve states controlled by the GOP have already passed 26 voter suppression laws in 2021. In many cases the same legislators who are pushing these bills are responsible for drawing the next decade's legislative maps, and they're openly plotting to manipulate the process.
The attacks on American democracy don't end there. Republican leaders all over the country are repeating the Big Lie about a stolen election and attempting to replace fair election processes and officials with partisan rules and party hacks. And they’re telling lies about the federal legislation that would protect voters and election procedures -- the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
I'm worried, John. I'm worried that if we can't beat back their attacks, our elections could be rendered close to meaningless. That's why the NDRC is fighting so hard for voting rights, for fair maps, and for democracy -- and with our end-of-month deadline coming up and so much at stake, we need you with us. Republicans are barely even pretending they care about fair elections anymore. Their primary focus is the acquisition and retention of illegitimate power. If you look at their lies about the 2020 election and their plans to manipulate the maps during redistricting, there's no other conclusion to draw.
We have to defend our democracy. Too many people sacrificed too much for us to simply give up and give in.
John, no one ever thought the right to participate in fair elections would be under attack the way it is today. But now that it is, it's up to us to meet this moment, to rise up and fight to save our democracy. Will you help the NDRC do that by pitching in to our end-of-month goal today?
