What's New In Health Affairs
In a new study, released ahead of print this week, Christopher Sun and coauthors evaluated emergency medical services (EMS) call data from the Boston area in the first few months of the pandemic to better understand patients’ reluctance to call EMS for cardiac-related care.

The authors found that there was a substantial decrease in EMS calls and an increase in hospital transportation refusals despite a significant increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.

In the newest addition to our “Eye On Health Reform” series, Katie Keith covers the American Rescue Plan Act, which temporarily expands the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits and increases federal financial incentives for holdout states to expand their Medicaid programs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted patients and providers to delay or cancel a substantial share of medical care in the past year. Kevin Callison and Jason Ward examined the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of patients who have been subject to these involuntary care disruptions.

In May’s Narrative Matters essay, Krista Lyn Harrison describes how the hospice model fails when patients die slowly. This post is part of Health Affairs' Age-Friendly Health series, with support from The John A. Hartford Foundation.

Listen to Harrison read her Narrative Matters essay on Health Affairs’ Narrative Matters podcast.

The GrantWatch column in the May 2021 issue mentioned a broad sampling of foundations’ recent funding in COVID-19 areas including vaccination, data collection and analysis, mental health, legal services, and more.
