John,
Yesterday Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans used the filibuster to block the creation of an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection. This is the first time since President Biden took office that Republicans have deployed the tactic.
It’s time for Senate Democrats, particularly Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to admit what we all know is true: This Republican Party is not willing to put country over partisanship. The overwhelming majority of Republican Senators would rather follow Mitch McConnell’s cynical and destructive political calculations than simply vote for a bipartisan commission to examine the truth about 1/6.
In fact, McConnell openly admitted that his opposition to the commission is completely partisan. According to a report in Politico, “McConnell warned Republicans at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday that regardless of tweaks to the bill that approving the commission could hurt the party's midterm election message.”
Here’s what Senator Joe Manchin said when asked if he was ready to break the filibuster over the 1/6 commission: “I’m not ready to destroy our government… I think there’s ten good people.”
Joe Manchin needs to get real. We need to eliminate the filibuster to save our democracy. Every single reform our country needs, including efforts to end big money in politics, stop voter suppression, and eliminate gerrymandering is threatened as long as Mitch McConnell is allowed to control the agenda by using the filibuster.
Thank you for all you do,
-HAZMAT America
