Friend,
At the time of writing this, we have about 72 hours until the Nevada legislature adjourns this session. But there are still a few major bills that need an extra push to make it across the finish line before the clock strikes midnight on Monday.
SB 420 is one such bill. It’s sponsored by the Senate Majority Leader, Nicole Cannizzaro, and would create the Nevada Public Option, a public health insurance option for the state, offering a high-quality, low-cost alternative to compete with private insurance. Individuals, as well as small businesses, would have a new option for insurance that is less expensive than private plans, shifting the overall costs of health insurance downward for everyone.
We all saw the need for this as thousands of Nevadans lost their jobs, and their insurance along with it, during the pandemic. Nevadans in rural areas also have long suffered from having only one or no market insurance plans in their area. The Nevada Public Option would address these problems by creating an affordable plan that is available statewide, and regardless of employment. Even further, SB 420 enhances maternity coverage through Medicaid, promoting healthier pregnancies for mothers and babies.
This bill was just heard in its Assembly committee, but needs to be voted out and brought to the full Assembly in order to make it to Governor Sisolak’s desk. Wealthy, for-profit hospitals and private insurance aren’t taking too kindly to SB 420, and so it’s up to us to show there’s massive support for it.
That’s where you come in! It’s time to take action to call your Assembly legislator and tell them why they need to pass SB 420. If you’ve ever struggled to afford coverage, or have had to grapple with the prospect of losing your job and access to care, those stories are exactly what our Assembly members need to hear right now.
To get SB 420 passed:
With your help, we can make the Nevada Public Option a reality! Nevadans deserve a more affordable option for health insurance. We hope you can join us in supporting this bold new policy before the session comes to an end.
Thank you for all your support,
