I want to tell you a quick story about the time I quit my job over Donald Trump.

After I graduated law school I found work as a civil litigator. About five years into my career, I took a job at a big law firm in Washington, DC. In 2016, I was assigned to a new client that immediately struck me to the core of my conscience: Donald Trump.

Trump was suing Chef José Andrés after he pulled out of a restaurant deal at one of Trump’s hotels. At the heart of the case was the disparaging and racist comments that Trump made on the campaign trail about Mexican Americans.

When I asked to be taken off the case, I was told that this was my job. That I should just “be a professional” and remove my personal feelings from the case. I knew then and there that I had to make a decision about who I was and what I stood for.

So I quit. And I never regretted it.

What you should know about me is that I’m not the type of person to simply roll over and ignore the struggles of our communities. I’m willing to take a risk if it means doing the right thing. Instead of defending Trump, I went on to work for Rep. Elijah Cummings and helped investigate the Trump administration.

I’ve taken risks throughout this campaign by standing up for issues I know are right. I’m the only candidate who has proposed decriminalizing all drugs and treating addiction as a public health issue. I’ve been the fiercest advocate for repealing harmful ‘Right to Work’ laws, while others fear backlash from big businesses. I’ve stood up and said that incarcerated Virignians still deserve the unalienable right to vote. That’s the bold leadership I want to bring to the table as Lt. Governor of Virginia.
