The Senate has a chance to finish what it started 20 years ago when the Dream Act was introduced.
Friend,

It’s been 20 years since the Dream Act was first introduced — two decades since Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced a bipartisan bill to protect undocumented children. Yet the Senate has failed to pass this crucial bill, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, into law.

Today, Dreamers are doctors, teachers, nurses, and essential workers. They are invaluable members of our communities, and they have continued contributing to our country despite the looming possibility of losing their livelihoods or being deported. Polls show that the American people believe they’ve waited long enough.

The four years of the Trump Administration made it painfully clear how our failed and harmful immigration system can be too easily weaponized, and until Congress allows the millions of undocumented families living in and contributing to our country to earn a pathway to citizenship, far too many people will continue to live under the threat of being separated from their families.

But we are seeing hope and possibility: President Biden has begun to reunite some of the families who were separated by the Trump Administration, and the House passed two critical pieces of legislation with a bipartisan vote, the Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act.

The Senate now has a chance to do what it should have done 20 years ago. It should act on this chance to deliver on America’s promise to Dreamers. It’s time for every U.S. senator to let the American people know where they stand.

From President Biden’s recent meeting with six Dreamers in the White House (including FWD.us’ own Maria Praeli) to the Biden Administration’s announcement that it would increase refugee admissions, it’s clear that momentum for a legislative solution is building. I’ve compiled the top six things you should know in this historic moment.

Now is the time for us to finally create a humane, orderly system that works for our modern world, prioritizes keeping families safe and together, grows our economy. Your support right now is more critical than ever.

I’m looking forward to keeping up this fight with you,

Todd

TAKE ACTION

Meet Javier

First Lady Jill Biden welcomed a very special guest to the President’s Joint Address to Congress: Javier Quiroz Castro. Along with nearly one million of his fellow Dreamers, Javier has made enormous sacrifices serving as an essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a nurse, he spent months working on the front lines in a unit that was so full of COVID patients that it ran out of beds.

Without a pathway to citizenship, Javier remains at risk of being ripped away from his wife and one-year-old daughter — and those who depend on our medical system risk losing a dedicated professional.

Experience Javier’s story and take action to support a pathway to citizenship today.

Biden Administration To Increase Refugee Admissions

For so many people seeking safety, the refugee system is the only legal avenue they have to come to the United States, even while they may face terrible persecution in their home countries.

The Biden Administration recently announced several measures that will improve protections and conditions for migrants, while improving border security and creating more opportunities for people surviving persecution to apply for protection closer to their homes will help reduce forced migration levels at the border over the long term.
