OK Jack xxxxxx, this is going to feel like a lot, but I want to explain it carefully, because otherwise, it’s that much easier for the Republicans to get away with it.
This legislative session has been one of the worst attacks on Texans in generations. The GOP has avoided addressing the real crises facing our state, and instead created new ones.
To start, here’s what DIDN’T pass: No bills about fixing our power grid. No bills to help families impacted by COVID. No bills to help the 1 million Texas kids in poverty.
And here are just some of the laws that have passed or are expected to pass:
A six week abortion ban, with no exeptions for rape, incest, or health. This law includes a provision that would let rapists sue the family of their victims if they assist with accessing an abortion.
A full ban on abortion if Roe vs. Wade is overturned - which may happen as soon as next year.
Permitless handgun carry, which eliminates state background checks, and allows anyone to carry guns throughout Texas.
Shocking new limitations on the right to vote which unapologetically target cities and counties that lean Democratic.
A law that would defund cities that try to redirect public safety money away from armed police and towards community health programs.
Mandatory bail minimums that will keep Texas in jail while they are awaiting trial.
Legislation that will allow rich suburbs to stop paying taxes to cities, even while still receiving services from them.
A law to criminalize homelessness statewide.
And that’s all just the beginning.
Some bad bills were stopped, thanks to the courageous opposition of advocates and allies inside the Legislature. But more are coming next session, unless we fundamentally reshape the politics of our state by booting Republicans from the Legislature and statewide office.
