The For the People Act is desperately needed, but the Far Right is waging an all-out war to block its passage in the Senate. Led by Mitch McConnell, the Right will stop at nothing to prevent this bill from passing as they know the bill threatens many of the dirty tricks they exploit to stay in power.
We JUST saw that McConnell and his allies are even willing to use the filibuster to block a bipartisan investigation into the January 6 insurrection – their willingness to abuse the filibuster knows no limits, and we can’t let that stand in the way of saving our democracy.
Unless the filibuster is eliminated or significantly reformed, there is virtually NO chance of the For the People Act passing and ushering in desperately needed measures that would help root out corruption and strengthen our democracy.
The Senate filibuster now stands in the way of this historic bill that would protect access to the ballot and our freedom to vote, create transparency and accountability to reduce the influence of corporations and the ultrawealthy in our government, strengthen government ethics requirements, and more.
It’s clear why the Far Right is doing all they can to prevent a bill like this from passing and why they’re investing MILLIONS to stop it. If Americans are ever going to see progress on the policy issues we care about, we must have a democracy that responds to the needs and priorities of voters -- not wealthy donors and corporate special interests.
The Senate must act with the urgency the current situation requires – and President Biden must champion their efforts every step of the way.
If we are unable to pass this historic bill, we face an increasingly uphill battle to stop the ongoing far-right attacks on our freedom to vote.
