As we wrap up May and head into the Summer months of the year, I want to give you a brief update on what has been going on in both Alabama and Washington, D.C.

Alabama to End Participation in Federal Unemployment Insurance

Earlier this month it was announced that Alabama will no longer participate in any federal unemployment compensation program, effective June 19. I was very pleased to hear this news, and I think it’s time our entire country follows suit. Taking away the incentive to work has led to incredibly poor unemployment numbers and a stagnant economy. Businesses need employees to operate, and the fact that they are struggling to hire people is alarming.

A few weeks ago I wrote an op-ed ([link removed]) about this very issue in the restaurant business. So many restaurants, locally and nationally, are having to cut down on their hours of operation due to a lack of employees. These places want to hire people, but there is no incentive to work since the federal government is still paying people to sit at home. This is simply unacceptable and it’s time to end this expanded federal unemployment insurance. Other states would do well to follow Alabama’s lead.

FBI Reclassifies 2017 Gunman as Domestic Violent Extremist

As you may recall, during the Summer of 2017 a gunman opened fire on the baseball practice of Republican members of Congress. Congressman Steve Scalise was hit with a near fatal bullet, and is lucky to be alive today. The gunman was a lifetime Democrat who had the clear intent of killing Republicans. It was nothing short of domestic terrorism. The FBI designated the gunman as intending to commit “suicide by cop”, which disregarded the obvious political motivation behind the attack.

After questioning the FBI publicly and working with my colleagues to change the designation, I am proud that the FBI listened to me and has now reclassified the gunman as a Domestic Violent Extremist. This reclassification gives justice to the Republicans who were there that day, and who have lived with the memory of that day for four years

Memorial Day

On Monday, we will celebrate Memorial Day, a holiday that honors those brave men and women who have died while in service to our country. While Veterans Day is set aside to honor all our nation’s veterans,
Memorial Day is specifically to honor those who as Abraham Lincoln said, “gave the last full measure of devotion.” It is because of these brave souls we live each day in a free nation, under God.

Be sure to check my Facebook page on Monday, because you’ll find a Memorial Day video that highlights some of the great monuments around Washington, D.C. that are dedicated to our military heroes.
