The Brady Legal team has worked tirelessly to get us to this point, John. After we sued the Department of Justice and ATF, we analyzed over 30,000 pages of gun dealer inspection reports, finding what we’ve asserted for years: The ATF is in desperate need of steady leadership, modernization, and Congressional support — rather than constraint at the behest of the multi-billion dollar gun lobby. Because even when gun dealers knowingly break the law, in most cases, they are given a slap on the wrist from the ATF. Far too many reckless gun dealers are still in operation.

This Week, We Educated Congress About the Importance of Safe Firearm Storage
This week, End Family Fire Director Ted Bonar testified before a Congressional committee about how safe firearm storage can reduce “family fire,” or a shooting involving a misused gun in the home that results in death or injury. Suicide, intentional shootings, and unintentional shootings are all forms of family fire — which, tragically, accounts for more than HALF of all gun deaths in America.
With an epidemic impacting so many Americans, especially the veteran community, it’s up to all of us — gun owners and non-gun owners alike — to help End Family Fire. In case you missed the hearing, here are 3 key points Ted explained about suicide and firearms:
- Firearms are the method of suicide that result in death far more often than any other. Roughly 23,000 Americans will die by suicide using a firearm this year. Contrary to misconceptions about suicide being impulsive, most people who attempt suicide have thought about the plan and action well ahead of time. That means these tragedies are preventable — if we reduce access to lethal means.
- When a person is at risk for suicide, an evidence-based strategy is to put as much time and distance between a person and a method as possible.
- There is a false belief that if someone wants to die, they will end their life through any method possible. But means for suicide are rarely substituted: If a firearm is chosen, it is not easily substituted.
The bottom line is that we can save countless lives by practicing and promoting safe firearm storage. We thank the Senate Judiciary Committee for hosting such a crucial conversion and selecting End Family Fire to lead the national discussion on safe firearm storage.

As this landmark bill becomes closer to state law, we thank our partners at Battle Born Progress for their legislative support and Assemblywoman Jauregui for introducing this bill. In 2017, Assemblywoman Jauregui survived the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, where a gunman shot and killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds more in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
Turning her pain into action, Assemblywoman Jauregui has championed this life-saving Nevada legislation, which sets a model for the nation by banning ghost guns and the parts necessary to build them. For the public safety of all Nevadans, we’re calling on Gov. Sisolak to sign this bill into law immediately.
