Today is a
major step towards true reproductive freedom in this country.

President Biden eliminated the Hyde Amendment from his Fiscal Year 2022
budget.

For more than four decades, the Hyde Amendment has denied access to
abortion care for low-income folx who receive health insurance coverage
through Medicaid — a burden that falls disproportionately on Black, Brown,
and Indigenous women.

The elimination of the Hyde Amendment has been a longstanding priority for
me and for reproductive freedom advocates across the nation.

The Hyde
Amendment’s days are numbered, and I’m going to keep working with my
colleagues in Congress to make sure every person in America has access to
the full range of reproductive care.

But we’re facing additional attacks on reproductive rights in several
states, and now the Supreme Court is gearing up to take on a case that
could threaten Roe v. Wade and access to abortion at the federal level.

not stop fighting until we guarantee every pregnant person’s right to

Today’s announcement has been a long time coming. For generations,
discriminatory abortion bans like the Hyde Amendment have perpetuated
systems of oppression and white supremacy targeting people of color —
especially Black and Brown people — and their bodily autonomy.

When I say it is time to legislate our values and write budgets that
affirm the dignity and worth of Black and Brown lives, I mean it — and I’m
glad the President agrees.
