Friend,

The Senate just voted on whether or not to create a bipartisan, 9/11-style commission to uncover the facts of the Jan. 6 insurrection on the Capitol.

Nearly every single Republican Senator just voted against the commission – votes whipped to the very end by Minority Leader McConnell, who is more concerned about taking a beating in the midterm elections than securing truth, accountability, and justice for the American people.

The hypocrisy of this vote is a new level of astounding, Friend. Many of the Republican Senators who voted against this commission were the same ones arguing in favor of it back in January, saying it was necessary as a prerequisite for any impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.

But now that the politics are inconvenient for them, the tables have turned. The American people should not have truth held hostage by such revolting, politicized hypocrisy. If you agree with me, I need you to speak out – and speak out by the thousands.

Will you add your name to my petition condemning the hypocrisy of Republican Senators for voting against a bipartisan Jan. 6 commission? In the face of such a reckless vote, I need every member of this team to stand united and speak out before midnight tonight.

Thank you,

Subject: The Jan. 6 Commission

Friend,

On Jan. 6, I was on the floor of the U.S. Senate debating the certification of Arizona's electoral votes for President. Mind you, this was a debate that ordinarily never would have happened, but it was pushed on us by an extremist Republican Party beholden to a lame duck President using lies and conspiracy theories to cling to power.

Within a matter of minutes, we were rushed off the Senate floor by Capitol Police. I remember moving past windows where I saw a mob carrying baseball bats, pipes, Trump flags, and Confederate flags. The Capitol was ransacked on Jan. 6. Five people were killed in the insurrection - and the aftermath left our democracy reeling.

From that day, I have urged the creation of a bipartisan, 9/11-style commission to uncover the facts about the storming of the Capitol by violent extremists. The American people deserve nothing less than the full truth – and all insurrection perpetrators must be held accountable.

In the immediate aftermath, it seemed most members of Congress were united around an investigation. After all, we had just witnessed, together, a violent attack on our democracy that was egged on by the then-President of the United States. Indeed, many of my Republican colleagues were urgently calling Donald Trump and his aides, urging him to call off the mob.

But just recently, only 35 Republican House members voted with Democrats to form a bipartisan Jan. 6 Commission. Now, Mitch McConnell has vowed to block support for the Commission in the Senate. At this critical moment, it's up to people like you to show the GOP that we demand the truth, which is why I need 1,000 supporters to sign my petition. Will you add your name now to tell Senate Republicans to support the Jan. 6 Commission?

It's not lost on me, Friend, that Mitch McConnell and his allies are the very ones who spent valuable time and resources on hyper-partisan committee inquiries into President Biden's son as well as then-Secretary Hillary Clinton.

And yet now, when the very symbol of our democracy is attacked in broad daylight – when Democratic and Republican Senators alike are together in a secure holding room as a violent mob attacks our Capitol – this is where they draw their line in the sand when it comes to truth-finding commissions?

When the vote for the Jan. 6 Commission reaches the Senate, Republicans will have a choice: They can stand on the side of truth and democracy, or they can stand with their 175 GOP counterparts in the House who voted for Trump's "Big Lie" and a violent mob. It's that simple.

We can compel Republican Senators to take the right course of action, but only if we speak out. So please, before my 11:59 p.m. deadline, will you sign my petition urging Republican Senators to vote in favor of the Jan. 6 Commission? Uncovering the full truth, and holding every insurrectionist accountable, depends on it.

Thanks for doing your part. I've been fighting for this commission since the day of the insurrection, and we're very close to it becoming a reality. We can't let extremist Republicans – who are more concerned with their allegiance to a corrupt former President – get in our way.

Dick
