Dear Friend,

URGENT UPDATE: This past Friday, it was announced that the Supreme Court will hear a challenge to a Louisiana law that would leave the state with only one doctor that can perform abortions. [1]  Most people who get abortions are moms and according to a 2018 report by the United Health Foundation, Louisiana ranked second only to Georgia in maternal mortality. [2] Abortion care is health care and Louisiana moms need more health care, not less.

We must continue the momentum to ensure that the right to abortion stays legal and accessible. While we can’t weigh in to the Supreme Court, we can urge every member of Congress to co-sponsor the EACH Woman Act. This bill would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funds from being used to cover abortions across the country! *When you click, you’ll automatically sign on if we already have your information.

Let’s be clear, all these efforts to restrict abortion care have only one goal in mind -- to end all abortion, period. Banning abortion doesn’t end abortion — it just ends safe, legal abortion. Legislation such as the EACH Woman Act will ensure that harmful bans on abortion, like the Hyde Amendment, will be overturned.

Abortion should be made more, not less accessible! Urge your member of Congress to co-sponsor the EACH Woman Act which would repeal the Hyde Amendment! *When you click, you’ll automatically sign on if we already have your information.

For over four decades, anyone who relies on government health care has been unable to use their benefits to cover the cost of an abortion. [1]

This week marks the 43rd anniversary of the enactment of the Hyde Amendment. This harmful amendment restricts government funds from being used to cover abortion—except in extremely limited circumstances—essentially ensuring that low-income women (and people of all gender identities) can’t access the same rights to safe, legal abortion as the rest of the population.

Our letter reads:

As one of over a million members of MomsRising, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the EACH (Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance) Woman Act to repeal the Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment restricts government funds from being used to cover an abortion—except in extremely limited circumstances. The Hyde Amendment excludes people who receive Medicaid, military personnel, federal employees, and Indigenous people from accessing their legal right to abortion. Denying access to abortion solely due to one’s socioeconomic status is completely unacceptable. More than half of the 7.5 million women affected by this coverage ban are women of color.

The time is now to overturn a ban that has only exacerbated health and income inequalities for millions of women and families over the last four decades. In fact, an American Public Health Association study found that women who sought an abortion but could not get one were more likely to be living in poverty a year later than women who did get an abortion. [2]

Being able to manage how many children we have and when we have them has been nothing short of revolutionary—not just for women and mothers, but for our country as a whole. Now is the time to ensure that every person with the ability to give birth has access to the legal right to abortion care.

Take action now! Join us to urge your member of Congress to co-sponsor the EACH Woman Act. *When you click, you’ll automatically sign on if we already have your information.

Abortion care is health care, period. And most people who have abortions are already parents. [3] The Hyde Amendment excludes people who receive Medicaid, military personnel, federal employees, and Indigenous people from accessing their legal right to abortion. [4] Not surprisingly, more than half of the 7.5 million women affected by this coverage ban are women of color. [5]

Currently, only 16 states have a policy that directs Medicaid to pay for all or most medically necessary abortions. [6] It is abhorrent that one’s access to abortion depends on their zip code or income level.

Tell your member of Congress to stand up against the Hyde Amendment by co-sponsoring the EACH Woman Act. *When you click, you’ll automatically sign on if we already have your information.

We’re gaining momentum in protecting access to abortion! This week, a federal court sided with our partners at SisterSong, Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, and the Center for Reproductive Rights, to block an abortion ban in Georgia from going into effect. [7] When we come together in collective resistance - we can and DO WIN!

The more people who speak out, the bigger our impact. Please take a moment to forward our action link to your friends and family and share our action link on social media:  https://action.momsrising.org/sign/hyde_2019/?t=14&akid=12961%2E2840598%2EQfcDaQ

Together we can protect access to reproductive health.
