People For Member, Far-right senators just used the filibuster to block the full Senate from even considering the creation of the bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection. This commission already passed the House with significant bipartisan support – even though it certainly had intense opposition from the Far Right who seek to whitewash the deadly events of January 6 and shield insurrectionists and those who incited them from accountability. Leading up to the vote, there were reports that Mitch McConnell was asking members of his caucus to filibuster the bill as “a personal favor.” OUTRAGEOUS. With no thorough investigation and no real accountability for ALL of those who fed the attack on our Capitol and the heart of our democracy, it’s almost sure to happen again … and the next time could be even worse … even more deadly. We’re right now at the intersection of two major People For campaigns: ending the legislative filibuster and ensuring accountability for the insurrection (and prevention of the next one). Not only do these two priorities dovetail into each other, the shameful actions today of far-right senators in blocking the commission vote is something we need to use immediately to help drive home just how much of a threat the Right’s abuse of the filibuster is to our democracy. As you probably know, online donations to groups like People For have slowed significantly following last year’s historic election, but this work remains urgent and vital to the survival of our democracy. We’re $21,099 short of our May funding target to keep these campaigns going, so I’m asking: This work doesn’t happen without your continued support. Thank you for being part of the fight and for everything you do. -- Ben Jealous, President
