Antisemitic Incidents Reported to ADL Increase Sharply During Israel-Hamas Conflict
During the two weeks of military conflict between Israel and Hamas in May 2021, antisemitic incidents in the U.S. reported to ADL increased by 75% compared to the two weeks before the fighting began, from 127 to 222, according to preliminary data. Many of these incidents appear to have been perpetrated by individuals scapegoating American Jews for the actions of the Israeli government.

As War Raged, Sparks of Light as Israeli Jews and Arabs Said No to Hate
As the tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hamas takes hold, Israelis – Jew and Arab - are facing the “day after” and the critical work of healing and repair that needs to take place within its own society and citizenry.
As thousands of Hamas rockets sent Israelis fleeing for shelter over the course of the eleven-day conflict, another wound has been opened within Israeli society: nights of violence, looting and horrifying expressions of hatred by Arab and Jewish extremists in Israeli cities with large communities of both Jewish and Arab residents.
But while these incidents of marauding extremists threatened the fragile social fabric of Israel’s diverse society, there were significant sparks of hope, with many Israelis, Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi, saying, “Enough is enough!”

Antisemitism on Social Media
The increasing conflict in Israel and Gaza in May 2021 has elicited social media commentary from around the world. In some cases, criticism of Israel has crossed the line into antisemitism. A number of antisemitic trends have emerged, including praise for Hitler,

promoting tropes about Jewish control and demonizing all Jews. Check out the links below to see our analysis of the surge in antisemitism on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and 4Chan:

ADL Cyber-Safety Action Guide
Most social media and online game companies rely primarily on reporting systems to alert them to hate on their platforms. These reporting systems are often burdensome and not designed with communities that are frequently the targets of hate and harassment online in mind.
With this in mind, ADL’s cyber-safety action guide is intended to help you find:
1.
Guides on how to report hate on a variety of online platforms from the platforms themselves.
2. A quick reference on platform policies around hate, especially in terms of what identifying characteristics are protected, to help with reporting hate online.
3. The full policies governing each platform for those who want more information.
4. User reports are one of the only ways to alert tech and gaming companies about hate on their platforms. Reporting is an important way to tell tech companies your experience and say hate has no place on their platforms.
Be an advocate. Use your voice. Report online hate.

#ActAgainstAntisemitism In recent weeks, there has been a significant uptick in antisemitic incidents in person and online, including Jews being beaten in New York and Los Angeles and their religious institutions threatened and vandalized. This comes at a time when antisemitism, hate crimes, and ethnically- and racially-motivated extremism remain at historic highs.
Targeting Jews for being Jewish is not activism or a foreign policy debate - it’s antisemitism. We condemn anti-Jewish hate, violence against Jews, and antisemitism in all spaces - no caveats and no qualifiers.
The Jewish community, and other vulnerable populations, have too frequently been the victims of assault, threats, vandalism, and other forms of intimidation, and our communities have stood shoulder-to-shoulder in calling out and addressing this hate.
Urge your Members of Congress to act with the utmost urgency to:
- Support bipartisan Congressional efforts to combat antisemitism including: the Senate resolution led by Senators Lankford and Rosen condemning the recent rise in antisemitic violence and harassment; or the House letter led by Representatives Deutch, Meng, and Fitzpatrick, urging President Biden to use the Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act to protect the American Jewish community from the rise in antisemitism in our country;
- Double the amount of funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to $360 million to protect faith-based institutions; and
- Allocate resources according to the threat, including fully funding the recently passed Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act.

Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration
Please join us for our upcoming inaugural Juneteenth Celebration on June 10, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. CT/12:00 p.m. ET. Juneteenth is the oldest holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States; specifically, when the word of freedom made its way to Texas.
Our keynote speaker will be Kelly Elaine Navies, lead curator and oral historian at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. She has also served as oral historian and Special Collections librarian with the Washington D.C. Public Library system. We are honored to have her share the rich history of Juneteenth and how its significance illustrates the hard-fought battle for equality and justice for African Americans.
