John, We are in the fight for our democracy. On January 6, we witnessed a violent insurrection at the US Capitol to try to overturn the results of the presidential election. Since that time, states across the country are passing new laws to restrict voting rights, particularly for communities of color. And, big money forces continue to dominate our politics. Free Speech For People has been hard at work to ensure that every American can exercise an equal voice and an equal vote in our democracy: - Challenging foreign influence in elections: In New York, we are spearheading the campaign to pass the Democracy Preservation Act before the end of the Assembly’s legislative session next month. If passed, the Democracy Preservation Act would be the first law of its kind on a statewide level to ban multinational corporations like Amazon from contributing to candidates, parties, or committees (including super PACs) or engaging in their own direct election spending.
- Fighting unconstitutional restrictions on voting: As many states across the country pass legislation that restricts voting, especially among disenfranchised groups, we are pursuing legal challenges to block this new voter suppression. These laws are direct attacks on the constitutional right to vote, in violation of the First, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We will update you soon regarding these cases.
