We are honored to announce that former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will appear as a special guest at our 20th Anniversary Gala on June 9. Secretary Clinton will be joined by an impressive lineup of national and international policymakers and LGBTQ leaders, including U.S. Representatives Maxine Waters (D-CA 43rd District) and Richie Torres (D-NY 15th District). The event will feature musical performances by Shea Diamond and Golden Globe winner Diane Warren.
To celebrate 20 years of research with impact, our gala will honor Chuck Williams and Stu Walter with the Founders Award. Additional awards will be presented to Colombia Diversa, Morgan Stanley, and Secretary Clinton in recognition of their work advancing LGBTQ rights.

NEW RESEARCH
** Older LGBT people twice as likely to be laid off during the pandemic as non-LGBT people
------------------------------------------------------------
Data collected in fall 2020 finds that older LGBT people (ages 45+) were about twice as likely as older non-LGBT people to have been recently laid off or furloughed from their jobs. In addition, LGBT people of color ages 45 and older were significantly more likely to experience financial insecurity related to the pandemic. They were twice as likely to report struggling to pay for household goods and their rent or mortgage as older white LGBT people.
Recently laid off work among US adults 45+

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Decades of Williams Institute research has established the need for federal legislation that would expressly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity under existing civil rights laws. In 2009, Founding Executive Director Brad Sears testified ([link removed]) before the U.S. House of Representatives about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would have prohibited LGBT discrimination in employment. Three years later, Lee Badgett testified ([link removed]) about the bill before the Senate.
Today, ENDA has transformed into the Equality Act, comprehensive legislation that would provide explicit federal non-discrimination protections in education, public accommodations, housing, credit, and employment. The current bill is informed by a wide range of Institute research, including studies on adoption and foster care by same-sex couples, experiences of LGBTQ youth in foster care ([link removed]) , poverty among LGBTQ people ([link removed]) , the harms of conversion therapy ([link removed]) , and the pattern of discrimination ([link removed]) against LGBTQ people by state governments.
Williams Institute scholars Lee Badgett, Todd Brower, Kerith Conron, Jody Herman, Christy Mallory, Ilan Meyer, Brad Sears, and Bianca D.M. Wilson have submitted over 160 pages of testimony ([link removed]) in support of the Equality Act. This February, the House of Representatives passed the Equality Act. The following month, the Senate Judiciary Committee held the first-ever Senate hearing on the bill.
