The world watched what happened on January 6. A violent mob laid siege to the Capitol to prevent the certification of the 2020 election. They violently assaulted police officers. They stalked the halls hunting for Members of Congress. They called for the death of Vice President Pence and Speaker Pelosi. They vandalized and destroyed without remorse and with smiles on their faces.
But Republicans in the House and Senate want you to forget.
Just moments ago, Senate Republicans followed Mitch McConnell’s lead in voting against establishing a bipartisan commission to ensure we find the full truth, seek accountability, and ensure this never happens again.
Mitch McConnell met this defining moment exactly how we have come to expect — he chose political expediency over duty to country. He asked his Republican colleagues to filibuster “as a personal favor.” Because he’s afraid the truth about January 6 would hurt his party’s political future — a future with Trump.
The GOP is playing politics with the most significant attack on our Capitol since the Civil War. And they are continuing to push the big lie to deny accountability for those responsible for January 6:
"It isn’t bipartisan.” The commission would have five Democrats and five Republicans.
"Democrats won’t negotiate.” We did. Again, five Democrats and five Republicans.
"This is political.” It’s about truth, accountability, and prevention — only their arguments against it are political.
This empty response proves that the Republican Party of the last generation is no more. They have become the anti-democratic party. And an anti-truth party. And are only beholden to their leader in Mar-a-Lago. Nothing else.
