Indivisibles,
This is it. We're no longer talking in hypotheticals: Right now, Mitch McConnell and a minority of Republican senators are filibustering the formation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly insurrection that unfolded at the Capitol on January 6.
They're filibustering despite the fact this bill received 35 Republican votes in the House.
They're filibustering despite the fact that Democrats made changes to the bill to earn their support.
They're filibustering because this is exactly what the filibuster was designed to do: serve as a weapon that a minority of senators can wield to veto popular legislation with majority support.
We're not surprised. We're furious. And now, we’ve got to get loud.
Right now, Republicans are using the Jim Crow filibuster not just to stand in the way of investigating the events of January 6 -- they’re using it to block essential democracy reform legislation like S. 1, the For the People Act -- all while Republican state legislatures across the country are passing hundreds of sweeping voter suppression laws that will make it harder for people to vote and have a say in our democracy.
No more.
Senator McConnell is showing us (again) who he really is, swatting away every attempt at good faith bipartisan work, and committing his caucus to partisan obstruction. For any senator hoping to appeal to Republicans’ better angels, today should be a wake-up call.
The choice is clear: save democracy or save the Jim Crow filibuster. But we can’t do both.
Stop what you’re doing right now and make a call to both your senators. Tell them to eliminate the filibuster to pass critical democracy reforms.
We don’t have time to waste.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
