Jabs, tests and caution still needed as we look forward to a sunny Bank Holiday

**A message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:**

Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council

The rare treat of a fair weather Bank Holiday and half-term school holiday beckons, bringing with it chances to meet up with loved ones and visit places that have long been off limits. It?s great that through our collective efforts we are now able to open the city back up. Decent weather should allow us to meet outside and where that?s possible it?s still preferable, in order to keep Covid-19 at bay.

While our rates are currently below the national average in Nottingham, we know how quickly that can change and so we can?t afford to become complacent and risk going backwards, especially now that most local cases are the variant that originated in India which is more transmissible. Our defences against this variant are the same ? hand washing, face coverings, social distancing and fresh air - and we should all remember to observe these. People without symptoms should take twice-weekly lateral flow tests and those with symptoms should take the PCR tests ? and self-isolate if they test positive.

But the main action anyone can take, if they haven?t already, is to get vaccinated. Anyone over the age of 30 is now eligible and those over 40 can simply turn up to any vaccination centre. A vaccination bus continues to tour parts of the city where take-up has been low. There are plenty of appointments [ [link removed] ] and plenty of vaccine so I would urge anyone who is eligible to take the opportunity as soon as they can. Every vaccine gives us hope and another step towards normality.

The reopening of many of venues in line with recent Government guidelines has meant that many of us have started to enjoy being able to get back to our usual sport and leisure activities and immerse ourselves in the city?s cultural offering. Local residents? top issues to be tackled in 20 Days of Action

Day of action

The City Council has been asking local people about issues in their neighbourhoods to find out what they want to see addressed. Their feedback will be used for a series of Days of Action which will be taking place across Nottingham over the next year. The council is teaming up with partners across the city to tackle issues such as crime, anti-social behaviour, fly-tipping and dog fouling. .

These Days of Action will be happening in all twenty wards across the city between June 2021 and March 2022 and will see an intense day of activity in each area which will make a visible difference to some of these problems. More details on these Days of Action can be found here [ [link removed] ]

*City centre retains Purple Flag status*

Council House lit purple

I?m pleased but not surprised to hear that Nottingham City Centre has once again retained its Purple Flag status - an accreditation which allows members of the public to quickly identify town & city centres that offer an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out.

In Nottingham, a partnership of organisations including Nottingham BID Nottinghamshire Police and the City Council is the main driving force behind the city of Purple Flag accreditation. We work together to attract a greater number of visitors into the city centre at night and to reduce any negative perceptions about the city centre.

Initiatives include our Street Pastor programme, Safe Space for people in an emergency or having a bad night and Best Bar None, a national accreditation for licensed premises that are well managed and operated. Nottingham holds the national record for most accredited venues with 116 bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants receiving accreditation in 2019.

With people safely returning to the city centre, this is a great award to receive to give people confidence that our city centre is a safe and enjoyable place to visit, whether you?re out for a meal, meeting friends or exploring our entertainment offer. Find out more [ [link removed] ]
