Public transportation is critical to our nation’s future and relies on strong infrastructure investment to continue growing and evolving to meet the demands of our communities. Any infrastructure legislation must provide funding that enables American communities to expand access to public transportation. Americans need mobility to reach work, attend school, access healthcare, and meet up with friends and family—and millions of people cannot drive or lack access to a car.
We appreciate that there is bipartisan dialogue happening in Washington—and we are hopeful that Congress will enact historic infrastructure legislation this term that includes increased investment for public transportation. But the new Republic Roadmap presented on May 27th will take our nation in the wrong direction when it comes to public transit. The Republican Roadmap proposes to CUT the current investment in public transportation by $15 billion over an eight-year period.
This proposal is deeply disappointing, and our lawmakers must do better. We need investments in public transit that help to rebuild our economy, advance transportation equity, and support our nation in addressing climate change. Severe cuts to public transportation will hurt our communities—and our nation.
We will continue to keep you informed about the progress of the infrastructure debate. We will also be calling on Voices for Public Transit advocates nationwide to support increased investment in public transportation that meets the needs of our growing nation. Please stand ready— we’ll be in touch again soon.
Thank you,
Chad Chitwood Voices for Public Transit Community Coordinator
