Friend, In the month of May we celebrate the many contributions of Asian and Asian Americans to this country. Leaders from AAPI communities have enriched every sector of American life. Unfortunately, those contributions have often been met with anti-Asian sentiment. The recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes can be traced to historical legislation like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Immigration Act of 1924 passed by our government, which made this country dangerously inhospitable to AAPI communities. At Faith in Action, we are building a world rooted in love. We know that the future belongs to those who can love. If we are to change the long history of anti-Asian sentiment in this country, we must build community and stand in solidarity with people of AAPI heritage. Part of building community is listening to stories. Recently, I had the opportunity to record a Revolutionary Faith episode with Rev. Deth Im and Imani Im, a father and daughter with Cambodian heritage. In our conversation, Deth and Imani discussed how Faith in Action’s organizing connects to the experiences of many Asian and Asian American communities. Listen to two members of the Faith in Action family share their stories. |
