Dear John,

Reimagining money, banks and our economy for the wellbeing of people, communities and our planet - that’s the north star the Positive Money movement will work towards over the next five years.

Over the last eight months, the Positive Money staff team, Board and over 1700 supporters have worked together to shape our new five year strategy.

Today, we're excited to share the final colourful product with you. Here are the headlines:

> Our mission, based on our core values, stays true to our roots: to reform money and banking to build a fair, democratic and sustainable economy.

> Our work will focus on four key areas: democratising money and banking, a green and fair Bank of England, a well-being economy, and new economy thinking.

> We’ve mapped the UK financial system using a 'house model' and a detailed map made by our research team. These look at the values, narratives and pillars of power our system’s based on, and its damaging outcomes. Alongside Donella Meadows’ ‘Leverage Points’, these frameworks help us to see the key challenges we face, and explain where we can intervene to change things.

> Our current financial system reproduces and benefits from structures of oppression - deeply rooted historical inequities in society. There is an urgent need to ensure the voices of disadvantaged groups and broader civil society are fairly represented in the decision-making processes of all the most powerful institutions in our society, including the Bank of England.

We are doing internal work as a staff team to develop our understanding of power and privilege, and to develop tools to tackle it. We aim to be an ally to all those who face structures of oppression. Part of this work includes analysing the racialised roots of our financial system [1], and giving a platform to organisations and authors already leading in this space.

> Our three-pronged programme approach is achieving results, so we’re going to keep 1) doing research, 2) influencing policy and the media, and 3) educating and mobilising public support alongside our partners in the new economy movement.

Together, we’ve made some fundamental changes to our economic system in the last few years: we got the Bank of England to reveal the power banks have to create money, we’ve pushed the ideas of 'QE for people' and Central Bank Digital Currency into the mainstream, and convinced the Chancellor to give the Bank a mandate to protect our planet. [2]

We’ve grown our supporter base to over 30,000 people, built coalitions with other grassroots groups and think tanks, and we now have Positive Money offices in London, Brussels, and soon the US too. Systems change is hard, but together we’re proving it’s possible.

Now, as we look forward, we have some crucial risks and opportunities on the horizon. This year the UK’s hosting the UN climate conference, COP26 — an opportunity to scale up our push for a climate-safe banking system. The Bank of England has recently launched a taskforce looking into a Central Bank Digital Currency, which we have applied to be a part of. And the Covid crisis has opened up important questions about who and what our economy is working for: a debate we can help shape with our media interventions, videos and webinars, policy work and grassroots mobilising.

Positive Money is people-powered. We’re a staff team of just ten, but with thousands of supporters like you, together we add up to much more than the sum of our parts.

We have a crucial few months ahead, and together we’ve built an ambitious strategy. Every donation to our work makes a difference to the impact we can have together. Hundreds of supporters already chip in. If you can, John, please will you make a secure donation today, so together we can achieve our vision sooner?

Thank you for all you do,

Rachel, Zack, Paul and the rest of the Positive Money team
