I am heartbroken to share that a mass shooting took place in my district yesterday, at a San Jose VTA light rail yard.
Nine people lost their lives and others were wounded before the shooter took his own life. Most of the victims were public servants who helped provide public transportation around San Jose and surrounding communities
I’m grateful to the first responders who cared for the victims. And my heart is with the victims’ families, everyone at the VTA, and all in my district who are grappling with this devastating and senseless tragedy.
I’ve been in Congress for almost five years. In that time, there have been 1,653 documented mass shootings. And in that time, we haven’t passed a single major law to prevent gun violence in this country.
Congress must pass universal background checks. We must stop the sales of ghost guns. And we must abolish the filibuster, because that’s what it’s going to take to pass these laws.
We must accept that it is the responsibility of every member of Congress to do all we can to stop the gun violence that rattles communities across the country every day. Until we act, the horrific tragedies will continue.
In solidarity,
Ro Khanna
