We have, in fact, started sharing instances of school nurses in the news in the Weekly Digest to highlight stories you may not have seen from around the country. Recently, the Missouri Association of School Nurses (MASN) effectively leveraged a previous interaction with a reporter at Missourinet.com, to express their view that Missouri schools would be wise to use a portion of the ARP funding to hire school nurses, especially for the 20% of schools across the state that do not have a nurse on site. COVID-19 Updates NASN Launches Prioritizing School Nurse Activities Tool Prioritizing School Nurse Activities is an interactive tool designed specifically for school nurses to help in the prioritization of practice activities for the day, week, or year. It will assist you to focus your time, attention, resources, and advocacy efforts. Playbook Offers Tips on COVID-19 Prevention Strategy As schools continue transitioning to in-person instruction, school nurses will help prepare and implement COVID-19 prevention strategies. Kaiser Permanente has collaborated with over 30 national school health organizations to create the “Planning for the Next Normal at School: Keeping students, staff, and families safe and healthy” playbook, which provides evidence-based guidance to adapting to school life after the COVID-19 pandemic. This resource suggests various ways school nurses can work toward decreasing the likelihood of disease transmission. Learn more. Infection Prevention and Control in Schools Resources Launched COVID Collaborative, Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, Brown School of Public Health, and New America task force released resources to help schools implement CDC guidance and safely get students and staff back to in-person learning. The guidance focused on infection prevention and control, including a roadmap of helpful case studies, a consensus statement from leading scientists on the science of how to best protect students and staff, and a use of funds memo outlining how to strategically use authorized funds. Resources for Reopening Schools from the Learning Policy Institute COVID-19 in Child Care and Preschool Settings: This research summary of 11 studies reveals that early learning programs are not associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 infection when providers follow proper mitigation measures. New York City Public Schools: Supporting School Reopening With a Focus on Testing and Tracing: This second brief in our reopening schools series describes New York City's reopening efforts, which brought students back through extensive cooperation between the district and the teachers union, multilayered mitigation strategies, and significant investments in testing and tracing. Marin County: Leveraging Education and Public Health Partnerships to Support School Reopening: This first brief in the reopening school series describes reopening efforts in Marin County, CA, which offers examples of collaboration and communication among school districts, the county office of education, and the county health office. Social media toolkit NEW COVID-19 Resources The American Nurses Association (ANA) and 19 nursing and healthcare organizations are joining together to announce a new vaccine education campaign: COVID Vaccine Facts for Nurses. CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends use of Pfizer vaccine on 12-15 year old youth after FDA authorizes for emergency use. CDC recommends schools continue to use the current COVID-19 prevention strategies for the 2020-2021 school year. COVID-19 and Students, Frequently Asked Questions: A resource designed to answer some questions families may have about students' health during COVID-19 and to support families with links to find additional resources.
