Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

We would like to inform you that the Goethe-Institut Washington will be closed on Monday, May 31, 2021, in observation of the federal holiday. All employees will be away from their workspaces and no blended learning classes or virtual events will take place.

This summer, we'll be seeing a lot of outdoor film screenings in the DC area – in fact, this weekend, we will co-present Shirel Peleg's film Kiss Me Kosher along with JxJ Jewish Film, Music, and Arts Festival. Catch this screwball romantic comedy on Sunday evening at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington in Rockville, Maryland. Be sure to bring chairs and blankets to sit on!

If you'd rather stay home and catch a film indoors, our STP-on-Demand concludes this weekend with Sergei Loznitsa's documentary Austerlitz. In his film, Loznitsa casts an inquisitive eye on the curious combination of tourism and trauma by examining Holocaust memorial sites as visitor attractions. Whether tourists are drawn to places like Sachsenhausen and Auschwitz out of interest in history, the desire to take a selfie somewhere "famous," to meditate on the past – in this quiet, reflective black-and-white feature, the filmmaker challenges us to consider what kinds of historical sites we visit, how we visit them, and why.

STP-on-Demand: Austerlitz (2016), dir. Sergei Loznitsa

There are places in Europe that have remained as painful memories of the past - factories where humans were turned into ash. These places are now memorial sites that are open to the public and receive thousands of tourists every year. The film’s title refers to the eponymous novel written by W.G. Sebald, dedicated to the memory of Holocaust. This film is an observation of the visitors to a memorial site that has been founded on the territory of a former concentration camp. Why do they go there? What are they looking for?

JxJ 2021: Kiss Me Kosher (2019), dir. Shirel Peleg

Sparks fly when two families from wildly different cultural backgrounds collide to plan a same-sex wedding in this fun-filled screwball romantic comedy.

After a string of brief relationships, Shira has finally found real love and gets engaged to Maria, a German who has uprooted her life with a move to Tel Aviv. The two families awkwardly try to overcome their cultural and religious differences, with the exception of Shira’s headstrong and fiercely independent grandmother, Berta, who strongly disapproves of any marriage between Germans and Jews. Berta will go to any length to break-up the happy couple, until her own love life gets complicated after she secretly starts seeing a Palestinian man.

This is an outdoor event presented in cooperation with JxJ 2021. The film will be screened at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.

The Beauty of Immersion: Past, Present + Future of Cinema

Panel Discussion | Friday, May 28, 1:00pm EDT

The Beauty of Immersion: Past, Present, and Future of Cinema

For the past year, we have very much missed experiencing a film in an actual movie theater. This theatrical space of the cinema is a space that allows us to escape from everyday life. But what exactly are the elements constituting that “ribbon of dreams” (Orson Welles) that make the cinematic experience so very special?

This panel discussion seeks to investigate this question by focusing on the cinema as a place of representation and reception that is deeply rooted in our cultural histories. What are the new forms of cinematic storytelling? What role does the immersive experience play, more and more driven, as it is, by various new technologies? And what role does cinema and a shared cinematic experience play for the community?
