Friend --

Republican governors have shown their true colors throughout the coronavirus pandemic -- spreading lies and disinformation, refusing to shut down public spaces, and providing minimal assistance to those struggling to pay their bills.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott wants to keep adding to the misery.

Last week, Gov. Abbot became the latest in a string of Republican governors to opt out of the federal government's enhanced unemployment benefits program. This policy puts an extra $300 per week into the pocket of those collecting state unemployment benefits.

What Abbott is doing is heartlessly cutting people who still need help off from this vital safety net. With the country still not fully vaccinated and many institutions still shut down, many people can't return to work yet. Some schools are still closed, meaning child care can be hard to come by. And immunocompromised people may not be able to return to work safely.

On top of that, Abbott is choosing the cruelest possible manner to force people back to work. By cutting off these benefits, Texans could be forced into low-wage jobs just to pay rent. Abbott and the Texas GOP are essentially telling their citizens “We don't care if it makes you poorer or is unsafe, you're going to go back to work, and you are going to like it.”
