John,

New research from Everytown for Gun Safety had added data -- and urgency -- to the work to end gun violence.

Check out our Follow the Data podcast episode with Everytown President John Feinblatt, where we explore the full costs of gun violence →

We already know that gun violence has a devastating, daily toll in the U.S. More than 100 lives are lost and more than twice as many are shot and wounded on an average day in America.

But the harm isn't fully measured by those numbers.

Beyond the immediate tragedy and trauma, gun violence generates extensive costs for treatment, long-term physical and mental health care, forgone earnings, criminal justice costs, and more.

On our Follow the Data podcast, Everytown's President John Feinblatt and Director of Research Sarah Burd-Sharps tell us about the staggering conclusion they reached: Gun violence in America costs $280 billion each year.

The $280 billion figure Everytown's research revealed is greater than the yearly budget of every U.S. state, and more than the annual allocations for many federal agencies. At a moment when every dollar counts, our federal, state, and local governments are spending a combined average of almost $35 million each day to deal with the aftermath of gun violence across the country.

On Follow the Data, the Everytown team tells us how they calculated the economic cost of gun violence, why good storytelling is critical in the fight for gun sense action, and how Everytown is working to prevent gun violence at the federal, state, and local levels.
