John,
Mitch McConnell is pulling out all the stops to kill legislation passed by the House last week that would create an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection on January 6th. He wants Republicans to avoid all accountability for what happened that day, and now he's pushing to use the filibuster to prevent the full truth from coming out.
Brazen attempts by McConnell and Republicans to downplay and normalize what happened on January 6th simply CANNOT be allowed to stand.
For weeks leading up to the House vote on establishing a commission, Republicans in Congress downplayed the insurrection. One Republican House Member even called it a “normal tourist visit.”
Their ludicrous claims have one purpose: To prevent any accountability for what happened.
Last week the House passed legislation to create an independent bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection on a 252-175 vote. Modelled on the 9/11 Commission, the investigative committee would include an equal number of Republicans and Democrats and require findings be submitted by the end of the year.
But Republicans overwhelmingly opposed the bill, and have responded with lies and complete nonsense. They claim a commission should investigate Black Lives Matter protesters, that it’s ‘too early’ to examine what happened, or that the commission would be too partisan.
They think if they vote against a commission we’ll just forget what happened. But they couldn’t be more wrong.
