Dear John,
Every day it seems like we’re bombarded with bad news, and not enough is being done to help the people affected. It can be discouraging, but there is so much we can do to make a positive impact on our community. This weekend, it was fulfilling and empowering to see all the hard work people are doing to make a difference.
We started off Saturday by attending the NYC Korean Parade with my daughter and husband to celebrate our family’s heritage and enjoy some delicious Korean snacks.
We enjoyed our favorite snacks including hoeori gamja or “tornado potatoes.”
On Sunday, we attended the No New Jails rally, to oppose New York City’s current plan to add borough based jails. Mass incarceration is devastating millions of families across the United States, predominantly families of color, and it also disproportionately impacts women. We must work towards solutions that reduce, not expand, incarceration. We should invest in programs that treat mental health issues and substance abuse to help keep people from entering the criminal justice system in the first place.
My family and this campaign stand in solidarity with community members who have been overlooked in the process of considering new local jails. It was an honor to stand alongside other families as we added our voices and presence to this fight.
If you agree we need to stop breaking up families, build #nonewjails, and focus on mental health and substance abuse treatment, support our campaign here. ([link removed])
Marching for #NoNewJails
Later on Sunday, we joined the #FightforNYCHA rally to fight for full funding of NYCHA including $32 billion worth of federal funds that have been deferred over the past several decades. We also called for more funding for affordable housing—an issue that’s been close to my heart my entire career. We need representatives who will fight to treat housing as a human right.
And because we cannot rest until we address the global threat of climate change, we also showed up in solidarity with Mighty Earth to protest Cargill Inc.’s reckless destruction of our rainforests.
Join us to elect a champion for affordable housing and the environment. ([link removed])
It’s an honor to support and stand with my fellow New Yorkers. I believe deeply that it is time to put our resources where our hearts and words are—will you join me?

Lastly, I want to wish those who are celebrating Yom Kippur a meaningful fast.
All my best,
Lindsey
