Denzel McCampbell will protect our right to vote and expand civic engagement, making sure our government truly works for all of us.
Friend,
I’m proud to share the news that our team’s advisor and Communications Director, Denzel McCampbell, is running for Detroit City Clerk!
City clerks coordinate and oversee the local election process, which is a crucial role, especially during a time where our voting rights are under constant attack. Here in majority-Black Detroit, in the swing state of Michigan, Black and brown voters have been especially targeted.
We need strong local leaders and advocates like Denzel, who will push back against voter suppression, build community coalitions, and work to implement best practices at the ballot box and beyond.
I’ve known and worked with Denzel for nearly a decade at the local and federal level on crucial issues such as water affordability, civil rights, voting rights, police brutality, reimagining public safety, LGBTQ issues, equitable development, racial equity, and so much more. His partnership in introducing bold policies and strong constituent services programs has already changed lives.

As an elected Detroit Charter Revision Commissioner, Denzel has worked closely with community members and organizations to ensure that we have a city charter that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and that centers the most vulnerable.
He recently wrote:
“Our government should be working hand in hand with community and civic engagement groups to inform residents on every aspect of government: what it is, who is in it, how it impacts daily life, how to interact with it, and where to pull the levers to affect change.”1
And he has innovative ideas about how to give residents the tools to be a part of the change they want to see, including:
Building teams of people in each neighborhood who will go door to door throughout the year to connect with every resident, whether they’ve voted previously or not.
Providing forums like mass assemblies to have thoughtful and engaging conversation between residents and city government, which will in turn produce solutions with community buy-in.
Can you imagine having someone like that representing you and your needs? Denzel truly wants to bring every Detroiter to the table, so our government works for all people. He cares deeply about our city and our ability to ensure that every one of our votes is counted.
I’ve endorsed Denzel and I’m confident he will serve our amazing city well, but he needs our help to get elected and deliver this vision for accessible democracy.
