Friends,
I watched in horror as the Capitol was overrun on January 6th by an insurrectionist mob seeking to overturn a fair and free election.
They did not succeed. But they left an open wound in our democracy that we cannot heal until we have uncovered how the attack happened and taken steps to ensure it can never happen again.
The American people deserve to know exactly what transpired on January 6th. I was proud to join my House colleagues to pass legislation that would create an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the attack on the Capitol.
Seeking the truth shouldn’t be a partisan issue -- but just 35 House Republicans voted in favor of the January 6th commission. Until the GOP becomes morally capable of putting country before party, they cannot be allowed to lead -- if you’re with me, will you chip in to my end-of-month fundraising goal to defend VA-02 and protect our Democratic majority?
As a 20-year Navy veteran, I swore an oath to support and defend our Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.
We swear this same oath as members of Congress. And we swear it as Americans -- not as members of a political party.
We must take a stand for the future of our democracy,
Elaine Luria
