Dear John, In the wake of the systematic voting suppression effort in dozens of states, including Georgia, Florida, and Arizona, the U.S House passed H.R 1. For The People Act, a comprehensive measure including provisions to expand voting access, make elections more secure, limit the influence of money in politics, and modernize election infrastructure. Earlier this month, the Senate Rules Committee voted 9-9 along party lines, making it more difficult, but not impossible, for the full Senate to consider the bill. Despite the procedural obstacles, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York has pledged to bring the bill to the full Senate.
Our democratic institutions are the underpinning of a flourishing economy. The principal of “equal justice under law” is as important to our businesses as it is to our civil society and our government. That’s why the American Sustainable Business Council believes it is critical for business leaders to speak out on behalf of an equitable, more transparent electoral system. Join the growing number of businesses that defend our democracy by demanding an equitable, more transparent electoral system. By signing this letter, you’re telling the two Senators who represent your state that business leaders support the For the People Act and the Senate needs to promptly pass S.1. President Biden has already committed to sign this bill to stop further voting suppression efforts, and to move us toward a better system that works for all.
