Republicans are negotiating in bad faith to water down legislation and ultimately block our priorities

Screenshot of a headline from the New York Times which reads, After Skirting Filibuster Fight for Months, Democrats Near a First BattleIndivisibles,

Later today, the Senate is voting on a bill to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. And there’s a very real chance that the GOP will use the filibuster to block it.

Here’s what happened: House Democrats acted in good faith and made compromises to get Republicans on board with the January 6 commission bill. But even after getting what they wanted, the vast majority of House republicans still voted against the bill. 🙄

Now, it’s coming to a vote in the Senate, and despite having all those things Republicans asked for, news reports suggest Mitch McConnell is planning to refuse support and filibuster the bill. 👎

Let that sink in. Republicans got what they wanted and could still refuse to support the January 6 commission.

This is just more proof that Republicans are negotiating in bad faith to water down legislation and ultimately block our priorities. And as long as the filibuster remains in Mitch McConnell’s toolbox, this won’t change. The filibuster needs to go.

Our $710,000 For the People Project is how we’re responding. It includes running radio and newspaper ads, supporting local events, writing resources, hosting call pages, organizing activists, and much more. But we can’t do it without you. Please, donate $10 to support all that work and more to reform our democracy, enable our progressive plans, and fund everything we’re working on this year.

This isn’t just the January 6 commission that we’re talking about. It’s all of our priorities. We thought Rachel Maddow put it well:

“They won’t even vote for the January 6th Commission. What are the odds of them voting for the infrastructure bill? I’ll tell you, it’s impossible to divide by zero, so don’t spend too much time trying to do the actual math.” -- Rachel Maddow

This is what we’ve been saying since we released our newest Guide at the beginning of the Biden administration: if Democrats assume that Republicans are negotiating in good faith, we will waste time and resources, and never be able to move any of our priorities forward. We need to go big, and fast.

We don’t have time to waste. With a fleeting few months left to pass some of the most ambitious bills of our lifetime, we need to act now to reform our democracy and get our progressive priorities in place. That means gearing up to abolish the filibuster and win major legislative fights without waiting to let the Republicans try to trick us again and again. Click here to donate to make sure we can do it.

If there’s one thing Indivisibles know how to do, it’s keep members of Congress focused on what’s important. Right now, it’s crucial we use all those skills to abolish the Jim Crow filibuster -- all our most important plans are held up until we do. We’ve won before, and we know how to do it again, so let’s get to work.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
